Types of Fencing

Residential and commercial users have many types of fencing from which to choose. The fence material they choose will depend on their budget and purpose. If you are in the market for a new fence, find out more about the different types of fencing you will see in the store.

Types of Fencing

Chain-Link Fences

Besides wood, chain-link fences are arguably the most popular and common types of fencing available today. While there is a variety of chain-link fencing produced by manufacturers, all versions are hot sellers because they are functional, easy to install and affordable. In addition, chain-link fences are quite versatile because they can be formed into an endless amount of configurations. All you need to do is install the posts at the desired locations. And then, you can stretch the sheets of chain link, wrapping the sheets around the posts.

You do not have to use chain-link fences in a straight manner. These types of fencing can be created into shapes like cage enclosures and baseball backstops. Most prisons incorporate chain link fences into their security measures.

Privacy and Perimeter Fences

Other types of fencing are privacy fences and perimeter fences. The main function of a privacy fence is to close off an area while blocking the view from the outside. It is common to see privacy fences also act as perimeter fences. These types of fences are usually made from vinyl or wood. Vinyl is known for being relatively cheap, low maintenance and strong. However, the installation process for vinyl fencing is not easy because the prefabricated panels are not able to be cut to size on site. And if the posts and panels are not properly connected, the fence will end up becoming loose or buckled as it ages.

Wood fences require more maintenance than vinyl ones. However, they are much more simple to work with when installing them. And it is easy to customize these types of fencing by shimming, sanding and cutting.

Electric Fences and Barbed Wire

There are other types of fencing, like electric fencing. Electric fences are not as common as vinyl and wood ones. These fences are made of a metal material that puts out an electric charge. These fences can be dangerous depending on the strength of the charge. They are used to contain animals and people within or to keep them out. Sometimes, people will add barbed wire at the top of an electric fence as an added protection measure. Anyone who tries to climb over the barbed wire greatly risks cutting their skin.

Other Types of Fencing

Even though it is common to see metal, vinyl and wood fences on residential properties, some homeowners use other types of fencing for various reasons. Sometimes, people use invisible fences to prevent their dogs from leaving the yard. This fence consists of buried electrical lines that operate with collars worn by the dogs. There is also garden fencing, which can be built from materials such as wood, aluminum or a light gauge of steel mesh.
