In the case of small animals, such as domestic dogs, there is no need for an elaborate electric fence. For dogs, an electric fence with 1-2 wires is sufficient.
While uncommon for residential and commercial properties, some places may use electric fencing with lethal power levels. If they have permission, vital utility substations, military bases and prisons may utilize highly-charged fences in order to prevent vandalism or discourage potential escapees. However, there must be warning signs posted so the chances of an accidental contact can be reduced.
